MagicISO is one of the best ISO tools around and offers an impressive array of ISO-related features. If you are interested in backing up the data stored on your hard drive, then MagicISO will be of interest to you, is it provides solid and reliable ISO-building capabilities. It is also able to burn ISO images 'on the fly' to a new disc, something which most ISO tools do not offer.
To learn how to create an ISO file from files and folders stored on your computer, and then optionally burn it immediately to a blank disk, check out our easy-to-follow guide.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1Start by downloading the installer file from MagicISO using the related download link for this article. Once the file Setup_MagicISO_5.5.281 has finished transferring to your computer, run it to start the setup process and follow the on-screen prompts throughout the installation process.
- Launch MagicISO using any of the program shortcuts you selected to add during installation. If no desktop or quick launch shortcut is present, use the MagicISO entry within the Windows Start Menu.
- 3Once the MagicISO interface appears, click File and New then select the type of ISO file you wish to create. If you want to burn the ISO to a physical disc, select Data CD/DVD Image. You can also create a 'bootable' CD/DVD image, which can be used to start the computer (instead of launching Windows), or a Unix/Linux compatible CD/DVD.
- Once you have selected the ISO type, the interface is divided into four windows. The top left shows a tree view folder structure of the ISO file, with the top right displaying a summary of the current selected directory. The bottom left and right panels show the same information for the local drives connected to your computer.
- 5In the bottom left hand panel, select the hard drive containing the data you wish to create an ISO file from, and then use the bottom right panel to locate the specific folder.
- Drag files and/or folders from the bottom right hand panel up into the top right hand panel. Repeat this step until all the data you wish to add to the ISO is visible in the top right hand panel. To create a new folder in the ISO image, click the New Folder icon on the toolbar. Folders and files can be deleted or renamed from the ISO by right-clicking them and selecting the appropriate option.
- 7Click the disk icon on the toolbar, or select File and Save to save the ISO file.
- To burn the ISO file 'on-the-fly' (straight away), click the burn icon on the toolbar. Insert a blank CD or DVD into the drive connected to your computer, and specify the image file you created in the previous step.
- 9Select the Write Speed and additional optional preferences, then click Burn It! to start burning. The ISO will be written to disc shortly afterward.
Tips & Advice
- If you only have a CD burner connected to your computer, ensure your ISO is not larger than the stated limit for the blank CDs you are using (consult the documentation provided with the discs). Most CDs can only hold about 650mb of data.
- DVDs can hold much more data (around 4gb) but it is still easy to get carried away and add too many files and folders to your ISO image. Ensure you keep within the size constraints of the discs you intend to burn your ISO files to.
